Request For Information
Request for Information No. RFI-2020-RERD-052
Metrolinx is accepting Requests for Information (RFI) for Platform Warning System
Metrolinx is a crown agency of the Government of Ontario and oversees GO Transit, Union Pearson Express (UPE), Rapid Transit Implementation (RTI) and PRESTO . The organization’s goal is to create a transportation network that enhances the prosperity, sustainability and quality of life for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton areas.
GO Stations provides immediate, barrier free access to commuters boarding trains from the platform which comes with the risk of passengers coming into contact with moving rail equipment at stations.
The use of the on-train bell is currently mandated in Rule 13 of the Canadian Rail Operating Rules (CROR) by Transport Canada (TC). The purpose of the bell is to warn the public of trains passing at GO station platforms and other locations. As train traffic increases, other methods of warnings are needed to mitigate safety risk to the public.
If an equivalent alternative could be found, Metrolinx could consider requesting an exception from CROR Rule 13 at stations where the bell poses the noise issues to the local residents.
Metrolinx is seeking technology solutions for detecting and warning passengers of trains, especially high-speed trains, approaching station platforms. Metrolinx requires the warning to be both via visual and audible as per AODA requirements.
